Before anyone could walk on the moon, Apollo first had to be given wings. Follwing the successes of the Gemini program, Launch Complex 34 was constructed to test the newest generations of launch vehicles. It was here that the Saturn booster was first launched, as well as the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 7. LC34 was also the site of the greatest tragedy of the program, the cabin fire that claimed the lives of the Apollo 1 crew.
